Richard Murray Wall Art

Richard Murray (Born 1948) was born in Utah but currently resides in Eastern Oregon. He has experimented with different subject matter and painting styles for more than 20 years before he settled on the animal portraits that he focuses on today. Murray attended the University of Utah. However, his landscapes and figural works were dismissed as obsolete at the school. He decided to leave the University to work in his studio after joining the National Guard. Murray struggled for several years working as an artist. He later decided he wanted to paint animals in a unique and new way. He therefore dedicated the last 15 years to painting images that looked like portraits of domestic and wild animals, including fawns, roosters, longhorns, cougars, and others.

The size of the actual animal determined the size of each work; each of his portraits is painted to scale - many of his works span 5 to 6 feet. Using oil on panel, he employs shadow and vivid light in his portraits. He paints the frame using the same neutral color as the background, so the projecting animal form is not detracted by anything. Murray is a faithful visitor of wildlife sanctuaries and petting zoos for his research work, and he works from photographs he takes at these locations at the end of the day during the low light. Murray’s home is a preserve of nature. It also serves as a constant source of inspiration for his paintings. Murray is a master of his art and a gracious man.
