Greyhound Art

Greyhound artwork has been around for a long time. Ancient kings used to keep greyhounds for pets and in many countries these majestic animals are still considered a symbol for royalty. Modern artists, in particular, have embraced the tradition of depicting these canines in creative designs. For many animal art enthusiasts, greyhound art is the epitome of canine fine art.

Several modern artists give a nod to the regal nature of these canines in their dog art. Traditionally, these animals were highly prized by noble classes and royalty as pets and hunting dogs. These animals were so highly revered, in fact, that commoners weren't allowed to own one. In several periods of history, these finely bred canines lives were actually valued more than human life. Graphic designs like 'Italian Greyhound on Red' by Carol Dillon show these hounds on ornate pillow and wearing fancy jeweled collars.

The usage of greyhounds in fashion prints is a classic example of greyhound paintings. These paintings contain a strong element of graphic design and use the thin, lean physique characteristic of greyhounds to highlight the vertical lines and statuesque figures of the models. Works like 'Evening Promenade' by Jocelyne Anderson-Tapp are perfect examples of greyhound fashion prints.

However, these dogs weren't only known as accessories of the wealthy and fashion conscious. The traits of speed and agility that made them so popular among the nobility are also addressed in greyhound canvas art. A large number of canine hunting scenes were also developed with these dogs as the focus. 'Starting for the Hunt' by Aelbert Cuyp is a representation of these lithe animals preparing for a traditional hunt. Works that feature this noble's past-time often feature foxhounds, as well, such as in the painting 'Huntsman With His Greyhounds' by William Henry Knight, although it isn't uncommon to see them alone like in 'Greyhound, Rabbit, and the Castle of Ariccia'. Generally hunting scenes with only greyhounds serve to highlight the speed and grace of these auspicious canines and showcase their breeding.
